The Mat: Where Pilates Begins
Before there were springs, straps, or sliding carriages… there was the Mat.
Simple and unassuming, the Mat is one of the most powerful tools and has remained the foundation of the Pilates method throughout its evolution. . .
Many of the Pilates movements we do in sessions on the Reformer or other apparatuses (like the Hundred, Roll Up, and Teaser) originated on the Mat! These Classical Mat exercises are the original work of Joseph Pilates—designed to build core strength, improve alignment, and increase flexibility.
Mat Pilates is especially effective because there’s nowhere to hide on the Mat! Mat work challenges the body to move with precision and control without the assistance or feedback of equipment. It’s just you, your breath, your core, and gravity. But this doesn’t mean you need to be an expert— Mat work can be equally beneficial for those who are just starting out as for veterans of the method needing an extra challenge.
What happens in a Mat class? A well-rounded Mat class includes spinal flexion, extension, rotation, and lateral movement. Sessions usually target the core, but also work the legs, glutes, arms, and back with movements that promote stability and mobility.
The skills developed on the Mat—spinal articulation, pelvic stability, breath coordination—translate directly to other forms of movement, whether you're dancing, running, or just sitting at your desk.
Props often show up in Mat classes! Instructors will often incorporate the magic circle, stability balls, bands and weights to assist you and/or increase the challenge of an exercise.
We LOVE and respect the Mat at Pilates on 10th as an essential part of the Pilates method.
Whether practiced classically or as a supplement to your favorite apparatus work—the Mat builds a strong foundation for everyone, reinforcing the principles that carry you through every session on any piece of equipment… being familiar with Mat work empowers our clients to take their practice to the next level and even beyond the studio!
BONUS: Once you’ve learned the discipline of a Mat practice you can take it anywhere! All you need is a little floor space.
